It's that time of July where the Back to School commercials are starting to air on TV. If you are anything like me, you pointed at the TV and shouted in your most disgusted tone, "Stop It!" My TV was clearly not phased by my intimidating teacher voice. It followed with another commercial where a harried kindergarten teacher is being overrun by children! Ha!
But later on, you guessed it, cute Back to School ideas popped on my Pinterest and I started pinning! Well, I guess I will stop fighting it and go ahead and post my own Back to School Post, but I am not letting go of my messy bun and flip flops just yet! When I begin this year, I will be teaching some students I have already taught. My tried and true beginning of the year books have already been read, loved, hugged, and discussed! What's a teacher addicted to picture books to do? Ha! Hello Book Store! (Like I needed an excuse!) Here's What I Found! Ten Rules You Absolutely Must Not Break To Survive the School Bus by Michael Allen Austin What's It About? Kyle is nervous about riding the bus. Lucky for him, or not so luckily, his older, "wiser" brother has some rules for him to follow. This great story line and illustrations help kids voice their misconceptions about new situations and how to handle them. Great Extensions- You can have your students write about what they were worried about for their first day. Afterwards, they can write whether their misconceptions were correct or incorrect. Or, you could also have them create 5 Rules For Surviving.... Rulers of The Playground by Joseph Kuefler What's It About? Jonah decides to become the king of the playground, everything seems to be going great until Lennox refuses to obey. The two children go to war and come up with some silly plans for their playground takeover. Great Extensions- I love to talk my students about leadership in our classroom. This would be a great book to talk about the kind of leaders and citizens we want in our room and on the playground. If You Ever Want to Take an Alligator to School, Don't! by Elise Parsley What's It About? Magnolia decides its a good idea to bring an alligator to school. Besides trying to keep the alligator from eating her classmates, she learns some things along the way. Great Extensions- All of these books are great for establishing class rules, but this one is great for talking about making good choice. Students need to understand that many of our choices affect everyone! And they have consequences!!!! Use this to create class rules or teach cause and effect. I love the silly humor of this book! Any books I should add to this list? Here are a few of my favorite tried and true books from previous years! |
